How to Fix QuickBooks Error 6177,0
You try to open the company file one day and QuickBooks will show error 6177,0. You get the message “QuickBooks is attempting to open this company file. Before you open the company file from your computer you must first select the file on the computer where the company file is located (6177,0). 

Cause of QuickBooks Error 6177, 0

The most probable cause why error 6177 occurs is

  • The company file is corrupted or damaged.
  • The file is not located in the same system where you try to open it.
  • Virus infection.
  • QuickBooks system files may be deleted.
  • QuickBooks could not find the path to the company file location.

There is no reason to worry if this error shows up. You can follow any of the approaches described below. 

Approach 1
You can try to resolve this situation by doing this:

  • If you are operating in a networked environment then find where the file is located in your network and then move it to your computer’s QuickBooks location for company file on C drive.
  • Open this file in QuickBooks Desktop
  • Now create a portable file.
  • Save this file to the computer’s local hard disk
  • Close the previously opened company file.
  • Restore the portable file and save it to the server
  • You should be able to open the company file when you run QuickBooks.

Approach 2
  • Download QB file doctor.
  • Install and run it once it is downloaded.
  • It should take care of the error. 
Approach 3
  • Delete network descriptor file which has a .nd extension from the computer in which company file resides.
  • Start QuickBooks database manager and click on add folder button. Navigate to the folder containing company file and click on OK and then on Scan and, when this is complete, on close.
  • It will show access permission of the company file. Set up company file access permissions.
  • Alternatively, create a new folder and copy company file to the new folder and reopen QuickBooks desktop.
  • Now try opening company file on the computer where the error message was displayed.

Approach 4
  • Reboot server and workstation and see if this resolves the issue
  • Check that you have updated versions of QuickBooks and if not, then try to update them. Pressing F2 will show which version of QuickBooks is running. 
Approach 5
If QuickBooks is hosted on the server:

  • Open QuickBooks
  • Go to File-Utilities-Stop hosting multi-user access and click Yes
  • Close QuickBooks and then open and see if this has worked.
  • Select file-utilities-host multi-user access and confirm by clicking on Yes
  • Open QuickBooks company file to see if it works.
