QuickBooks is quite extended and its complexity can result in a number of errors showing up, some of which can puzzle and confuse users. One such error that can be displayed is the error code 6189 which shows up when you try to open a company file. 

Causes Behind The QuickBooks Error 6189 

QuickBooks Error 6189 ( and related 6189-82, 6189-77, 6189-1005) occur when a user tries to open a company file. This can arise due to a number of reasons some of which are given below.

  • Limited permission assigned to the user in QBDataServiceUserXX or in Windows
  • The QuickBooks version does not suit the company file. This happens when you try to open a later version file in a previous version of QuickBooks.
  • The company transaction log file is older than the company file you are trying to open.
  • The company file could be corrupted or damaged. 

There are Several Ways You Can Use to Resolve the Error 6189 Issue you face in QuickBooks. 

Approach 1
One of the simplest ways to resolve error code 6189 is to update your QuickBooks to the latest version. The latest version will open a previous version company files but not vice versa.

Approach 2
If the above does not solve your error 6189 issue then you can download QuickBooks Doctor File, install it and run it, which should probably resolve the problem.

Approach 3
This is a manual approach to resolving error code 6189 in QuickBooks and you proceed this way.
  • Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder that contains the company file.
  • Find the association transaction log file which usually has the extension.TLG.
  • Rename this .TLG file with any other name but take care to retain the file extension.
  • Now start QuickBooks. QuickBooks automatically creates a new log file and you should be able to open the company file. 
Approach 4
If the above step does not work then try this approach:
  • Open windows explorer and navigate to the QuickBooks folder  (c:\users\public\documents\intuit\quickbooks\company files) that contains the company file and transaction log file. The company file has extension .qbw.
  • Right click on company file to display properties
  • Click on a general tab and choose attributes and click on advanced to open the advanced attributes window.
  • It will show if the file is encrypted by showing the checkbox as marked. Uncheck the box. Click on OK.
  • Copy the file by right-clicking and selecting copy.
  • Paste to the desktop. Try opening the file.
  • If the file opens it means the location of the file is corrupted. Use appropriate tools to check hard disk and this should resolve the issue of file corruption.

Approach 5
  • If your company file is stored on the networked storage device or removable device it may not open.
  • If you use data file share service like Dropbox or online auto backup it can cause error 6189. Move the file to the right folder as shown above (c:\users\public\documents\intuit\quickbooks\company files).
