  • You are not using the right version of QuickBooks to open the file
  • The company file is corrupted or damaged
  • The file may be encrypted and you may not have permission to access it.
QuickBooks will show errors in the 6000 series or H### series of C series. You do not know the actual reason why QuickBooks will not open the company file.  You can try any of the approaches given below.

First, however, you must find out the problem.

Now that you know that problem is with company file you can do any of the following.

Approach 1
  • Launch QuickBooks and if you have the sample company file open, close it and return to the No Company Open screen.
  • Close or log off from the file menu.
Approach 2
  • From the no company open screen you click on Utilities in the file menu. Pick “stop hosting multi-user access” and select it.
  • Open windows explorer and navigate to C drive and to the folder where the company file with extension .qbw is stored. Copy it and the log file with extension .tlg and paste them to another location on the hard drive.
  • Now go back to QuickBooks no company open window and click on open or restore company file and choose Open a Company file option.
  • Browse to the location where the company file is and select it.
  • Press Alt key and then click on open while keeping the Alt key pressed down until file opens.
  • If the QuickBooks company file in its right folder on C drive does not open, navigate to the folder on the hard drive where you have copy-pasted the files and try to open them and follow the above procedure to open the file.
  • If the file still does not open then delete the .tlg file. Try opening the company file and if it opens it means there was an issue with the log file. You can now return to the native QuickBooks folder on C drive and delete the .tlg file and open the company file.
  • If it still does not work you can go to the folder where you have saved a copy of the .qbw file and rename it taking care to retain the extension and then try opening it.
